How to Convert PDF to PNG
Converting a PDF page to PNG gives you a sharp, widely supported image that is easy to place in a document, presentation or web page. You can convert every page or select only the pages you need, without installing software.
1. Convert PDF to PNG online
The fastest method is the free browser-based converter on pdftopng.co.uk. Your PDF is processed on your device, so it is not uploaded to a conversion server.
- 1Open the PDF to PNG converter.
- 2Drag your PDF onto the page or click the upload area to choose it.
- 3Choose All pages or Select pages.
- 4Set the output resolution. The 2x default suits most documents.
- 5Select Convert, then download the PNG images.
A one-page PDF downloads as one PNG. Multiple pages are packaged into a ZIP so the individual PNG files remain easy to organise.
2. Convert PDF to PNG on Windows, Mac or mobile
On Windows
For a complete page at a predictable resolution, use the online converter in Edge, Chrome or Firefox. It creates the PNG from the PDF page itself instead of capturing only the pixels visible on your screen.
For a quick crop of one visible area, open the PDF and press Windows key + Shift + S. Select the page area, open the Snipping Tool notification and save the capture. This is useful for a quick excerpt, but it is less suitable for full pages or multi-page documents.
On Mac with Preview
- 1. Open the PDF in Preview and display the page you want.
- 2. Choose File, then Export.
- 3. Select PNG from the Format menu.
- 4. Choose the resolution and save the image.
Preview is convenient for one page. For selected ranges, an entire document or several PDFs, the browser converter avoids repeating the export process page by page.
On iPhone, iPad or Android
Open this site in Safari or Chrome, choose the PDF from Files or your device storage, select the pages and convert. The same page-selection and resolution controls work on mobile, and you can save the resulting PNG or ZIP through the browser's download controls.
3. Choose the right PNG resolution
A PDF does not have one fixed pixel size. Text and vector graphics are rendered at the resolution you choose. Higher settings create larger pixel dimensions and make small text clearer when zoomed, but also produce larger files.
Increasing resolution adds pixels, but it cannot restore detail that is missing from a low-quality scan already embedded in the PDF.
4. Convert selected pages and multi-page PDFs
You do not need to convert a complete document. Choose Select pages and enter a single page such as 4, a range such as 2-6, or a mixed selection such as 1-3, 5, 8.
Page numbers refer to the PDF itself. If several PDFs are added at once, the same selection is applied to each one. Each page remains a separate PNG rather than being joined into one unusually tall image.
5. Does PDF to PNG preserve transparency?
PNG supports transparent pixels, but a normal PDF page has an opaque page background. Converting it produces a PNG that looks like the original page, usually with a white background. The process does not automatically remove that background or isolate objects from the page.
This is normally the correct result for reports, forms, invoices and presentation slides because it preserves the page exactly as it appears in the PDF.
6. PNG or JPG: which format is better?
Choose PNG for text, screenshots, line art, charts and diagrams. Its lossless compression keeps hard edges and small lettering clean. Choose JPG for photographic pages when a smaller file is more important than perfectly preserving every pixel.
If your PDF mainly contains photographs, use the PDF to JPG converter instead. For mixed documents and text-heavy pages, PNG is usually the safer choice.
7. Common PDF to PNG conversion problems
The PNG looks blurry
Increase the resolution to 3x or 4x. If the PDF contains a low-resolution scanned image, a higher setting can create more pixels but cannot recreate detail missing from the scan.
The output contains several PNG files
That is expected for a multi-page PDF. Each page becomes its own PNG. Use Select pages if you only need one page or a particular range.
The PDF asks for a password
Open the document with its password and save an unlocked copy before converting it. This tool does not bypass PDF security.
8. Frequently asked questions
Can I convert only one page of a PDF to PNG?
Yes. Choose Select pages and enter one page number. You can also enter ranges such as 2-6 or a mixed selection such as 1-3, 5, 8.
How do I convert a multi-page PDF to PNG?
Leave All pages selected. Every PDF page becomes a separate PNG, and multiple results are packaged in a ZIP file for convenient downloading.
Will links or selectable text still work in the PNG?
No. A PNG is an image, so PDF links, form fields and selectable text are flattened into pixels. The page will look the same, but it will no longer behave like a document.
Can I convert scanned PDFs?
Yes. Each scanned page is rendered as a PNG. The result keeps the appearance of the scan, while the chosen resolution controls the output dimensions.
